Progress

Finally I feel like I can see some structure in my studying. Meaning that i can see the topics I know a lot about and I can also see where I still need to put in a lot more work. But the most important of this is, that I can see the end. Not the end of the exams I mean, or the end when I will not have any more time left, but the end of what I need to learn. I don't see this huge pile of undefined things anymore, where I didn't know how long each of them is gonna take to learn or where I should start. It all took shape.
At last I must say... exams are to come in only3 days...

Feels good to have at least a bit more certainty in my very near future. It'd just be nice if I had that also for the next weeks to come...!
And so: No, for all of you who have been wondering (I got a lot of text messages the last two days asking me that question): I do not know yet whether or not I have been selected to go on the CEED in Thailand.

AAahhhh..... I hope it's gonna come out soon!!

A Visit and a Jump

I visited the Swiss Press Photo 05' exhibition today in the Käfigturm in Bern. It was awesome!! Guys... take the time and go there! But hurry, it closes tomorrow (Saturday). Entrance is free, by the way...

And, I made a very good experience today: overcoming my fear...! I went down to swim in the aare this afternoon and my friends decided, that they want to jump off the bridge. They said it was fun and not dangerous and I was like: I'm NOT gonna do it! Even though the bridge was not high, really, I was scared like hell. But so we climbed over the fence and stood there... ah Jesus, I was horrified...
Friends: "Lets count to three and jump all together!!"
Me: "wait, wait!! Lets count... ähm lets count to 10...ok? and then will see...." Thinking to my self: I'm never gonna jump!
They didn't like that idea so much and just stared counting. And I jumped!
And guess what? I didn't miss the river, I didn't die of a temperaturshock or anything else and it wasn't even such a long way down. I really liked it! And it made me think. Maybe many things in my life that I'm scared of aren't such a long way down either. Maybe most of the things are not as difficult and hard to do as they might appear to, and all I have to do is jump in.

Hurry Laura, hurry, hurry!!!

This is the sentence that is in my head these days from the minute I get up until I go to bed at night.
There are 18 days left until my first exam (it's gonna be statistics, luckily...). It took me quite a while to realize that the moments of truths are sooo close. It came as a huge shock last friday when I looked into my calander and had to see the horrifying fact: 3 weeks left!!!
So now, I feel like it's all getting too much... I have 18 days to:
- write 2 more papers
- studying for 5 exams (statistics, math, macroeconomics, political economy, public law)
- working on my summerplans
- beeing VPER

And all this in the setting of a 30 degrees hot and beautiful city, and facing 2 huge temptations:
Marzilli - bad & soccer worldcup!!!
:-((((

Key learning point: Start earlier with studying next semester!!! (wait a minute... I have been there before, haven't I????)

Some thoughts on studying

There is something I have been thinking about a lot lately; I guess it's something most of the students go through at some point:

How important is it, to study exactly the subject on whith one beliefs to have more future in the work life? Or is it more important to study what you are interested in?
And how important is it, to know, what you actually want to work?? If I don't know what I want to work, how can I stay motivated and focused? The clear goal is somehow missing...

How do you experience that? What are your thoughts on this?

read

Came across a very good (german) article on the GEO homepage about megachurches in the USA and their views on religion. Definitely worth taking the time.
So much about fundamentalism...

Offiziersball

My friend Chrizi has just finished the officers school and therefore had his officers ball to whitch he asked me to accompany him. And of course I went, even though I felt a bit weird to go to such a truly military thing, me, who has greates difficulties in seeing the point in most of the things the swiss army does.

So the event took place in the stunningly beautiful setting of the Lenzburg Castle.
The food... wow man, 6 courses, each of them more than just delicous!

This Ball was probably the most formal event I have ever been to. The women were dressed so fancy... uh, I felt utterly underdressed!

But the most impressing thing of that night was, that EVERYTHING was done in a "Knigge" correct way. Seriously: The whole evening. On whitch side the man has to walk, how to introduce each other, when you start dancing (exactly 10 sec. after the military-super-guru), the man accompanys the woman to the bathroom and waits until she is done.... strange, I tell you!I never experieced that before and it's very interesting to see. Takes a bit to get used to... but after a while it actually gives you a pretty nice feeling to be taken care of in to an almost bewildering extend :-).

Some interesting discussions where held as well, in the sort of sense like "so tell me, how do you infiltrate a non existing enemy...?" Lukily I held that disscussion whith an officer who is member of GSOA (Group for a Switzerland without Army). Yes, such officers exist!!

Thank you, Chrizi for the invitation, it was a very nice an interesting night!

Ih :-S... imagine....

spying on the chickens...

There is an LC in Switzerland who has not only an impressing number of motivated members, but is also doing very well in all departments and subsystems!
Oh yes, Geneva... How do they do it? The EB of Bern started to wonder... So we thought, let's go and have a look!
Unfortunately I was going all alone, because it was set on a very short notice.

Attending the EBM and right afterwards the LCM, I did notice some differences in the way things are done and I'm excited to share them with the rest of Bern! Jehh! Interesting updates coming up!!

After the LCM was over, I visited my sister in Geneva. Very nice dinner! I just love hanging out at her place. Its always relaxing. Each time I come, it has new awesome pictures hanging on the wall and I simply love hearing the stories behind them!
I really hope that was not the last time at rue du maisonneuve... since you're studies will be done soon.
